Hawaii Island - "Big Island"
Nicknamed the Big Island, it’s also the youngest and largest in the archipelago. This island has a dynamic landscape that unfolds like a living canvas of natural wonders. From the fiery depths of Kilauea, one of the world’s most active volcanoes, to the snow-capped peaks of Mauna Kea, this island offers a striking contrast of climates and terrains. Black sand beaches, lush rainforests, and ancient petroglyph fields provide a rich tapestry of experiences. Dive into the water on a night Manta Ray swim, stargaze atop Mauna Kea’s observatories, or traverse the dramatic Waipio Valley. Big Island promises adventure and an unparalleled connection to the forces that continue to shape these awe-inspiring landscapes.
What Type of Traveler is Big Island a Good Fit For?
Finding the right Hawaiian island for your clients is very important. It involves understanding the unique offerings of the island. Big Island has plenty of unique offerings, the main one being the landscape and an active volcano. Below is a check list of tips to help you understand if Big Island is the right fit for your clients.
Photography Enthusiasts
Because Big Island has a lot of rural areas and there are so many different ecosystems, it’s a unique place to photograph. From lava fields that stretch for miles and miles, an active volcano, to snow capped mountains, black sand beaches, a green sand beach, and lush rainforests with waterfalls, there’s always something to photograph.
Coffee Connoisseurs
Renowned for its Kona coffee, this island provides a delightful experience for those who appreciate the art and flavors of this world-famous beverage. Touring Kona coffee plantations, participating in coffee tastings, and learning about the art of coffee cultivation is widespread across the island.
Nature & Wildlife Lovers
There are plenty of outdoor activities to partake in on this island. Hiking, viewing waterfalls, viewing an active volcano, bird watching, black & green sand beaches, etc. Snorkeling, and the iconic Manta Ray night swim is very popular here. There’s even a seahorse farm.
Culture Seekers
There are historic petroglyph sites in Waikola and at Volcanoes National park. There is also the Hulihe’e Palace museum, and the kuamo’o battle site and Lekeleke burial grounds. Big Island is very rich in history and culture.
Travelers Who May Not Enjoy Big Island
The Big Island’s charm lies in its natural beauty and rural landscapes, which may not appeal to those seeking a bustling urban experience. There’s a little bit of shopping in Kona, Hilo and Waikoloa, but not what a shopper would expect. Big Island is also not suitable for those that are looking for a beach vacation, unless they can afford one of the luxury resorts along Hapuna beach. Big Island isn’t known for a variety of beaches, so this may not be the right island for that experience. Big Island may also not be the right fit for someone if they do not like to drive long distances. Being the biggest island out of the island chain, things are really spread out and it does require a lot of driving to get out and explore and to get from place to place. It may also not be appealing to those looking for a more tropical landscape, as most of Big Island is covered in lava fields and can be quite drab looking to someone who doesn’t know what to expect.
